Goodbye maternity clothes

Today Laila was a champion napper so I got so much done around the house which was great! I literally had a mountain of laundry to sort through, and after folding my 4th maternity shirt, and 3rd pair of maternity pants...I literally went nuts and did a whole closet overhaul. No more maternity clothes for this mama! When I started to tear apart my closet, I decided to be brutal with my choices of old clothes that I am keeping, but after going through them (not being able to wear them for the past year!) I felt like I was shopping, and didn't get rid of as much stuff as I thought. I did end up with a garbage bag full of throwaways, bag of clothes to donate, and TWO BAGS OF SHOES! I couldn't believe it. I sat and tried on every pair of shoes I own, and had to get rid of/donate almost every pair. My feet grew a size and a half with pregnancy which was a side effect I was not expecting. I started a size 8.5 and now I'm a size 10! I'm only 5'5" so yes, I have skies for feet now ;)
My giant pile of maternity clothes
Looking at my emptier side of the closet now, I'm more inspired and motivated than ever to get my butt in shape and get some new clothes (and shoes). I've started compiling a list of things I can't wait to go and buy when I'm at my goal weight. I have wanted a pair of Hudson Jeans FOREVER so that will definitely be a fun purchase. More on my list in an upcoming blog :)

In writing news, I got an e-mail today from Pacific NW Fertility which is the clinic we used for IVF, and they have asked me to write our success story for their website, and possibly an upcoming newsletter. I am absolutely thrilled! I would hunt down success stories on the internet for hours when we were contemplating going through with IVF, and when we were in the middle of the whole process. It's so comforting to know that other woman out there have the same hopes and fears, and most importantly to know that it can work, it's so worth it! I'm hoping to link my blog to the article because I would love to answer any questions, or help support anyone I can who is going through it.

We are headed down to Chehalis, WA to my husband's family's house for the weekend to watch the Super Bowl. Here's to hoping I don't completely ruin my diet and can stay away from all the yummy (horrible for you) snacks that go along with Super Bowl Sunday.

                                                           GO SEAHAWKS!

Can this be???

Today marks day 4 of my workout and healthy eating plan and I am just so pumped I have to share my results mid week. I was going to wait until the end of the week to weigh myself and do my measurements but I was seeing such a big difference that I got curious and did it this morning. I can not believe the results I've had in just 4 days! Holy moly.

Week 1/2

Weight lost this week... 4 lbs
Total weight loss.......... 4 lbs
Inches lost in waist....... 1/2 inch
Inches lost in hips......... 1 inch
Inches lost in thighs....... 1 inch
Inches lost in arms......... 0 inch
Total inches lost............. 3 1/2 inches

If that's not motivation, I don't know what is!!!

In Laila news, we got her a pair of big girl jam jams and she just looks so darn cute I have to share :)
Gotta go workout and shake my Brazilian boom boom, as they say :)

going...going...GONE!

I know I said I was starting my weight loss plan a few weeks ago, but as I said in an earlier blog post, I've been battling a nasty sinus infection. So I got delayed. Staring at those Brazilian Butt DVDs as my (almost 6 month postpartum) butt sat on the couch was not fun. So this morning was my Day 1! Holy crap did I ever get my butt kicked! I chose the slim down calendar and schedule of DVDs; so today consisted of two workouts including an ab workout. I didn't realize how much strength I've lost in my core from pregnancy and my C-section. I have to say though, it felt amazing to workout and now I have so much energy!

I'm the type of person that needs visual motivation. I saw this great idea on Pinterest, and decided to try it for myself. These are just two small vases and some gardening marbles that I bought at Fred Meyer. When the pounds to lose are broken down like this, it doesn't seem so daunting. Even on weeks where I only lose one pound, it's still one more pound to my goal. Going, going...GONE!
Another thing I've been doing to keep me going is compiling a list of Why's. Why I want to reach my goal. It's something I can look at when I'm having a moment of weakness, or want to give up. Here's a short list of my Why's.

WHY

So my wedding rings will fit again
So Laila will have a healthy role model in me
So I can love how I look in pictures
So I can throw away my maternity clothes
So I can go on a shopping spree and love trying on clothes
So I can feel sexy again
So I can walk around at the pool in a bikini this summer and swim with Laila and not feel self conscious
Because I deserve to look and feel my very best
So I can inspire someone who happens to read my blog.

And the list goes on.

I will be doing weekly updates on my progress. Oooof, here we go!

This and That

It's been so long since I have written any new posts! I've been suffering from a nasty sinus infection since Jan 1st that really wiped me out! Especially taking care of my little goofball all day long. During any down time all I wanted to do was lay on the couch, watch daytime TV, and maybe catch a nap!
Thankfully after two rounds of antibiotics I'm starting to feel like myself again. It has been absolutely beautiful here in Western Washington and the sun has been shining for the last three days! We took full advantage and went for a big walk yesterday. I finally got the chance to try Laila's sunglasses on her and she loved them! Silly girl. I'm hoping that she continues to like them to protect her eyes as she gets older. Of course, halfway through our walk, she succumbed to the movement of her stroller and the fresh air and fell asleep.

In writing news, I met with a girl that I used to work with, who is currently earning her degree at Western Washington University in English, and she invited me to the Children's Literature Conference that takes place March 1st. I can't wait! Four authors will be giving presentations: Nic Bishop, Jennifer Holm, Steve Sheinkin, and Laura Vaccaro Seeger. It will be so interesting and helpful to hear about their writing process, and the steps to take to become a published author.
I recently got started on a new story which is exciting since I've had the idea for at least 3 years, and every time I try to write it, it just never turns out quite right. So hopefully I can keep the ball rolling, and the pencil moving!

I just have to share a story of what happened last night when Chris, Laila and I went out to our favorite Mexican restaurant. A mariachi band plays there every Friday night, and it consists of 5 men with guitars, and violins who go around and play for you as you eat. Well they came around to our side of the restaurant and you would've thought Laila was a pre-teen who spotted One Direction. She couldn't stand up fast enough on my lap and as they were playing she was jumping, screaming, and laughing so loud everyone on our side of the restaurant was watching her instead of the band. It was absolutely hilarious, and probably one of the cutest moments we've had so far. She just couldn't get enough. I think Miss Laila might need a set of toy maracas.  She also got a big girl cup. (I didn't let her drink out of, of course).
And one other piece of randomness, I found the absolute best mascara I have ever ever ever tried! It's Benefit They're Real mascara. I'd heard good things about it, and saw that Macy's had them in sample sizes so I snagged one. It literally works like magic. My lashes have been so skimpy since having Laila, and after using it, they look so much thicker and longer. The only bad thing is it's pretty hard to get off.
Excuse the chipped nails
Well that's all the random this and thats I have lately. It's been pretty quiet and boring at the Raymor house since I've been sick. Have a fantastic Saturday!!!

Birch Box

Last month I subscribed to a really fun beauty product delivery service called Birch Box. I love getting packages in the mail, especially when it's a surprise! You'd think it was Christmas morning by my excitement when my little package arrives in the mail!

When you sign up for a monthly subscription, it walks you through making a beauty profile, so they send you fun products to try based on what you're interested in, age, beauty concerns, etc. Since I'm such a girly girl, and love trying new products, I am in love with this service!
Today my Birch Box arrived and I received an Under Armour mini headband, Ruby Wing color changing nail polish in color Mini Kitten Heels, Midnight Monarch hand cream, two Nelson J Beverly Hills hair masks, and my favorite...the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser (including a cute wash cloth!).

Can't wait to see what's in my Birch Box next month!

Laila - 5 months

Miss Laila Kate is 5 months old! I can't believe it. She is so much fun! Watching her learn and discover new things everyday is amazing and I feel like I am learning and discovering new things everyday as well! She is a total goofball, and so smiley - ahhhh melts my heart! Her eyebrows kill me - it looks like I draw them on each morning! Her hair is coming in slowly but surely and she isn't sporting a male pattern baldness hairdo anymore. For awhile there we were calling her "our little George Costanza!"

5 MONTH STATS

Height: 27 inches!

Weight: 17.5 lbs

Clothing size: 9 - 12 month

Favorite food: Apples mixed with baby oatmeal

Milestones reached: Rolling over from her back to her tummy.

Favorite toy: It's a tie...Laila adores her Vtech Cora Cub that Uncle Brian got her for Christmas. She literally screams and throws her arms up when we turn it on for her-she just can't take the excitement!

She also loves another Christmas present... her jumper that Nanny and Grandpa bought her. She figured it out within a day and is content to jump, and jump, and jump. When we go to put her in it, her little frog legs start moving before we can even get her feet in the holes!

Favorite Activity: Playing peak a boo. Laila is genuinely shocked when you, her toy, burp rag, etc reappears! She thinks this is hilarious...we do too :)

About to settle in to watch The Golden Globe awards! Have a wonderful week, and don't let the Sunday blues bring you down!

Losing the baby weight

Confession: It's been 5 months since Laila was born and I'm still wearing my maternity jeans, and some maternity shirts. Ugh! I won't lie and say it wasn't convenient wearing those stretchy waist jeans during Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, but I am ready to lose the weight! I will admit that I gained A LOT of weight when I was pregnant. In my defense, I had severe swelling in my ankles, hands, face, everywhere but still...I wasn't the healthiest and I'm definitely paying the price now which is a closet full of clothes I can't fit into anymore, and I refuse to go buy bigger clothes. I gained 60 lbs in 9 months. I came home from the hospital 30 lbs lighter, and another 15 lbs came off within two weeks of Laila's birth. The effortless weight loss has stopped and it's time to put in the work.

The morning of my C-section - 39 weeks pregnant - 194 lbs!

I'm so glad to be blogging about it because now I'll be accountable! It's a great way to track progress and I know so many other new mommies are out there in the same boat. I am the queen of rationalization. I wish I had a nickel for every "last hurrah" meal and "I'll start tomorrow" promises I've made myself. That's not going to fly on this blog, and in my life anymore.

So it's my last "starting tomorrow" and I really am starting tomorrow and not going to quit. I realize it needs to be a lifestyle change and not a quick fix. So here's the plan:

I recently purchased the Brazilian Butt workout. I know, I know. I'm going to blame The Victoria Secret Fashion Show for this purchase, because all those cute booties on the runway inspired me...and then I happen to see the infomercial for Brazilian Butt the next day and how he's Alessandra Ambrosio's trainer and SOLD... I pulled the trigger. I tried one workout last week and it was SO HARD. Like ridiculously hard and that made me feel better about spending so much money on a few DVDs because I know if I stick with it, I will have a butt just like this!

JUST KIDDING! However, I do want to feel like a hot sexy mommy and be able to wear a bikini and look damn good when I go to Las Vegas in May. In addition to my butt workout, I will be walking/running on the treadmill 30 minutes per day.

As far as diet goes, I know myself and I need to write things down to keep track. Otherwise I'll conveniently forget things like how I had a leftover slice of cold pizza for breakfast. SO, I downloaded the MyFitnessPal app on my iPhone and it's really cool - it tracks your calories, exercise, etc.

My goal is to lose 25 - 30 lbs in 5 months. I'll do a weekly update on my progress and if I have amazing results by May, I might show my before and after photos. As you can imagine, as it stands now...my before photos are appalling. So we'll see!

                                                                 Happy Saturday!!!

Infertility and IVF

I was going to wait and post about infertility and IVF later on, or maybe never, but this month marks two years since our IVF journey started at Pacific NW Fertility (www.pnwfertility.com) and I have been reflecting so much on our experience that I wanted to share our story. The reason I'm being so open about all this is because when we were first having problems getting pregnant, then referred to a specialist, then finally made the leap into the scary and confusing world of IVF, I would scour the internet looking for anyone, and everyone's experience. The heartache of infertility and the process of IVF can make a girl feel pretty alone, isolated, scared and confused and I appreciated other honest posts and experiences more than I could ever express. So maybe someone out there will find this story, and find hope just like I did. Here goes...

Chris and I got married pretty young. Chris was 24, and I had just turned 23 so we were more than content to enjoy our 20s baby free and have fun. Once we were more settled, and bought our house we decided it was time to start a family! Up until that point I hadn't been on birth control and was just being careful based on the time of the month. Looking back it's pretty funny because I thought I was so good at this and remember times I actually bragged about it-haha. Trying to have a baby at first is so fun. It's exciting, and the anticipation each month brought so much joy to our relationship. After a few months passed, I was starting to get frustrated, but wasn't worried. Then a year passed, and as always turned to the internet and joined an online community of other girls trying to get pregnant, hoping to pick up some tips and connect with others in the same boat. Well, after a year and a half passed, and everyone but me on the discussion board was pregnant, I panicked. Something was wrong.

I went to my family doctor, I guess just hoping for reassurance that sometimes these things take time. Instead she referred me to a reproductive specialist. I felt like my world had come crashing down. I was 28. Up until that point, I had only heard about IVF and infertility treatments from places like US magazine or some celebrity gossip site when so and so had fertility treatment because they'd waited too long and were now in their 40s. So mustering up my courage and dignity, we made our appointment.

Our first doctor (who I'm not going to mention, but there's only a few in Bellingham so do your research) was awful. I'm a warm and fuzzy kind of girl and this man was all business, and literally laughed and scoffed at some of our questions. I had a wham bam thank you ma'am kind of check up, told there was nothing really wrong with us, and it was promptly recommended we do IUI (Intrauterine insemination). This involved taking an oral medication every day that mimics menopause symptoms (hot flash and night sweats included), going for regular ultrasounds until everything looks perfect. Once it's the right time, you get a big shot in your ass and come back a few days later to have a catheter inserted through your cervix to inject sperm directly into your uterus near your fallopian tubes. Not fun. But we were really hopeful, and felt like this could be our answer. Well, it wasn't. We did 4 cycles of this with negative results. We got frustrated and made an appointment to talk about what our next step was, and were told it could take up to 10 cycles. Ummm...no. We promptly took our records and left with nothing but a terrible experience, a broken heart, and a maxed out credit card.

I did some research and we ended up finding a clinic in Seattle called Pacific NW Fertility. (Just a quick plug for them, if you're looking for a clinic in the Seattle area, they are amazing). On our first appointment there, a diagnosis was made and Chris and I were told we have less than 2% chance of ever getting pregnant on our own, including IUI. This was the start of our IVF journey.

IVF is so complicated, that I'll just summarize. If you want more information you can e-mail me :)

My package of medication arrived at my work. That's a big box!
My medication schedule included birth control pills at the start of the cycle, then 3 injections per day into my stomach for approximately 10 days. That causes all of your eggs for that cycle to grow, instead of just one. Ultrasounds follow the growth progress of the eggs, and once they are big enough, you have your egg retrieval. The egg retrieval is a mini surgery where I was put under, then they insert a giant needle into your fallopian tubes and extract the eggs one by one. It was surprisingly easy and the recovery was quick. Just some cramping. I had 17 mature eggs that were the start of our possible baby :) We were thrilled.

Taking the first pill...Here we go!

Once the eggs are out, they injected Chris's swimmers into the eggs, and put them in an incubator that mimics the human body. We waited and prayed that they would develop into embryos.
In a typical IVF cycle, 1-2 embryos are put back into the uterus 3-5 days after the egg retrieval. However, I developed a rare side effect that caused my estrogen levels to become extremely high, making it a impossible for me to get pregnant. So the 5 embryos that survived were frozen for later use.

A couple of months later, once my levels returned to normal, we went in to transfer two embryos! We were beyond excited and was sure this was our turn, our time. The transfer is really a miracle and a special experience. They bring in your embryos and put them under a microscope so we could see them and they are literally vibrating with life. Amazing. They insert a catheter through the cervix and place them gently in your uterus. And with that, we brought our babies home and the 10 day wait, and daily progesterone injections began.

Transfer #1
9 days later I couldn't stand it...I took a home pregnancy test. Now let me preface this by saying we were warned. They said, "DON'T TAKE A HOME PREGANCY TEST". I did anyways, and I so wish I hadn't. It was positive. We couldn't believe it. We laughed, we cried, and we promptly called and told our families the news. The next day, I had the official blood test and got the call that yes, I was pregnant, but my numbers were too low. The reading was supposed to be 60 or higher, and mine was 32. The nurse said to wait 3 days (the longest 3 days of my life) and retest. If the numbers doubled, that was a good sign. If not, it's a sure early miscarriage. My number was 43. Again, my world came crashing down.

I was done. I was SO done. I'd had it. I felt defined by my infertility and it was ruling my entire life. The pain and sadness is so consuming that it eats you alive. The worst thing about pain like this is you don't have anyone to be mad at. You can't blame someone. You can't yell at anyone, or do anything to make it better. You can't just try harder. It is what it is, and you're stuck on this hellish roller coaster until you decide that it's time to get off. And it was time for me to get off.

We decided to take the summer off...at least, with tentative plans to do another transfer in the Fall/Winter of 2012. We had a great time that summer. I felt free, I could breathe, collect my thoughts, and remember who I really was. October 2012 rolled around and we felt ready. We were a bit guarded and jaded at this point, no longer the young naive couple we were when we walked into that first clinic. This wasn't our fist rodeo.

The second delivery of meds arrived, and I felt hopeful and even a little optimistic. This cycle consisted of more of the same...ultrasounds every other day, injections, and finally the transfer. We transferred two embryos, and one was especially promising and already looking to implant. I put myself on bed rest for 3 days to give the embryos the best chance possible.

Our embryos

Needless to say, this cycle we didn't do a home pregnancy test. On the morning of day 10, I went to have my blood drawn and raced home to wait for the call. The wait seems like days, the anticipation was excruciating. Around 11am on December 3, 2012 our favorite nurse from the clinic called and said..."YOU'RE PREGNANT!" We couldn't believe it. We cried, we laughed, and spent most of the day looking at each and saying, "Can you believe it?" It was one of the most magical days of my life. I remember so clearly walking into the future nursery and just standing there crying...the whole experience was actually worth it. It happened. It was finally our turn. We are going to be a family.

I  had a fairly smooth pregnancy, but after going through IVF and having all the disappointment I couldn't help but feel like I was waiting for the ball to drop...like some sort of set back or disappointment was right around the corner, but it never came.

Laila Kate Raymor was born on August 4, 2013 via scheduled C-section. She weighed 8lbs 7oz and is the most beautiful being I have ever laid eyes on. We were instantly in love, and I'd do it a thousand times again for her. It was painful, heartbreaking, and scary but the moment I laid eyes on my baby girl, it all melted away. I still will look at her, and can't believe she's mine. That it actually worked. She's my everything, and we're so lucky, and finally a family.

I know it's early but...

I have become that crazy person who wants to deck her house out for every. single. holiday. No joke. I'm a little ashamed to admit that I already have up Valentine's Day decor. To my defense, Target was having a crazy sale on Valentine's Day gear and I couldn't help myself. Who can help themselves at Target anyways? You go in for one thing and end up with a basket full...at least I do! So here's a sampling of some of my decorations. And no...I'm no finished yet! The banner came in a kit and you put it together yourself! I felt very crafty putting it together and was surprised how much fun I had! Even though it's basically a bunch of stickers! The banner kit was just $3, the tins on the mantle were $1, and the felt bag was $1. So see? Couldn't pass it up ;)

Hi, I'm Amanda!

I just have to say, I'm surprised at myself for doing this...starting a blog. So much has happened to me in the past year and I have such big dreams for the future that sometimes I guess it's nice to document along the way. As the title of my blog states, I'm going to be chasing my dreams and catching life along the way.
So allow me to introduce myself. I'm Amanda. I live in NW Washington state. I'm married to my amazing husband Chris (for 8 unbelievable years) and I just had a baby girl in August...Laila Kate...my heart, my love. Yes, I am a first time mom fumbling my way through this crazy, unbelievable journey they call Motherhood. We had quite the journey to Miss Laila including lots and lots of fertility treatment, and ultimately IVF. She's our miracle baby. I quit my job as a Certified Medical Assistant to be a stay at home mom. So this is my journey! Let the chase begin!
